When people think of New Orleans, they think of Mardi Gras, music, and, of course, FOOD! Being from south Louisiana, staple foods like Jambalaya, Crawfish Étouffée, and Gumbo bring a deep sense of comfort and nostalgia to mind. Although I’ve been surrounded by delicious options, it can be difficult at times to find options that are gluten-free. So…I have compiled a list of gluten-free and gluten-friendly spots to take the guesswork out of your next trip to the Crescent City! Of course, this list is not exhaustive, but these institutions come highly recommended by my friends and me. Without further ado… the New Orleans Gluten-Free Restaurant Roundup!
Hen House
After making the decision to eliminate gluten from my diet, I was recommended to check out this little breakfast and lunch café in Gretna. I was literally so emotional seeing the case of baked goods ALL donning a “GF” logo. I typically stop in for pastries, but their breakfast and lunch menu (prepared in a gluten-free kitchen) are equally as delicious. My favorite treats to get from here would have to be the giant cinnamon rolls and oatmeal cream pies (my husband is also partial to these)!

Bearcat
Since living in New Orleans, this restaurant has soared! After opening a second location, Bearcat Baked, they have received an enormous amount of attention….and rightfully so! Not only are the staff super knowledgeable about allergens, but the menu items available are delicious. I had the Bearcat breakfast with GF pancakes and a lemon poppy seed muffin to-go, and it did not disappoint! Keep in mind that this is not a dedicated GF establishment.
The Ruby Slipper
Y’all…this restaurant…insane! Before eliminating gluten, I was obsessed with the Ruby Slipper. I have not had the pleasure of dining since becoming GF, but their French toast has come highly recommended to me by other gluten-free friends! Their trademark is brunch, and my do they do it well.
Molly’s Rise and Shine
At this point, you’ve probably caught on that I love a yummy breakfast, and Molly’s Rise and Shine always hits the spot! Gluten-free options were not listed on the menu, but the staff were very knowledgeable and pointed out what would be safe to order. At the time, my options included tamales, grits and greens, and the carrot yogurt (which looked so delicious). I decided on the collard greens and grits, and holy moly was it flavorful! Definitely give this quirky spot a try!
Ayu Bakehouse
Y’all know I love a sweet treat! Ayu Bakehouse is another recommended gem that serves GF tarts and cookies. After a quick glance at their menu, there are also several breakfast and lunch options that seem to rotate.
True Food Kitchen
True Food Kitchen stands by its mission of bringing nutritious food to the community by using real, in-season ingredients that are sustainably sourced. The blueberry pancakes and bison sausage were divine, paired with the adaptogenic tulsi tea. I also noticed how enthusiastic and proud the wait staff were about the food that they were serving, which made the experience top-notch. I cannot wait to return and try out their delicious lunch and dinner menu!
Mais Arepas
Looking to try insanely delicious Colombian cuisine? Mais Arepas is your go-to spot, with its completely gluten-free kitchen and menu options. I was able to indulge in the “Cerda” arepa for my meal, and my gosh was the marinated pulled pork fantastic paired with their signature sauces and plantains. A must-try in my book!

Barracuda
This is one of my favorite spots to not only hang out with friends and soak up some sunshine, but also to share a yummy meal! Most of their tacos can be made gluten-free by swapping the tortilla for corn instead of flour. Not feeling a taco? This stand also serves delicious bowls. Though, my preferred order typically includes one steak taco, one chicken taco (or broccoli, depending on my mood), and chips with guac of course. Oh, and don’t forget to try the signature margarita with seasonal fruit….they are out of this world!
Superior Grill
Right off of beautiful St. Charles, you can find some pretty superior food…and margs! The menu clearly marks the gluten-free options, which is a pretty great round-up. I love their fajitas which come with melted butter and all the fixins, as well as their gooey crawfish enchiladas! Be sure to ask for corn tortillas of course. My husband is also obsessed with their chips and queso!

Shaya
Looking for a new date night spot? Just off of Magazine St, sits a cozy Israeli restaurant with drool-worthy offerings such as fried chicken hummus (yes, you read that right), crispy halloumi with seasonal fruit, and halabi spiced hanger steak. This restaurant deserves all of the applause it receives for its creative and delicious pairings. Be sure to make a reservation as Shaya is typically booked!
Sukho Thai
Last but certainly not least, Sukho Thai! I was pleasantly surprised to be given a separate gluten-free menu, offering the most delicious grilled salmon and pineapple curry. I still dream about the fantastic flavor of this dish, which our whole table tasted because it was just that good!

I hope that you love these restaurants just as much as I do! I’d be delighted to hear your feedback.
With love,
Lauren
